The realm of the future is nanoscale
the "Smaller-than-small"
![]()
After a hiatus of several years the Nanopicture of the Day is once again being updated to highlight the latest amazing discoveries from the nanoscale world.
Each day we'll bring you another stunning and amazing image of the world that lies beyond our everyday experience. Nanoscience is a catch-all word describing the many different disciplines of science that study phenomena and structures with length scales on the order of nanometers (10-9 meters). Objects of this size are impossible to see with conventional microscopes, and become entirely impossible to manipulate with normal physical means. We will showcase many different amazing structures and effects from biology, chemistry, physics and engineering that are seen only with special tools, or through computer models.
If you are interested in learning more about a picture, please follow the links provided to the scientific journals referenced (if you have access) or to the websites of the contributing and featured researchers.
If you would like to contribute an image to our gallery to be displayed we welcome your submissions. Please email the webmaster with the image, a caption describing the image, scientific references (or another pertinent contact or reference if the image is unpublished elsewhere), and if available the URL of a webpage with more information.
The Nanopicture of the Day is currently compiled and maintained by Ryan Munden, Visiting Assistant Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Fairfield University. It is also hosted and supported by the Mark Reed group at Yale University. Feel free to contact us for more information.
Current contributions are also being compiled by students at Fairfield University in the EG 210 - Intro to Nanoscience and Nanotechnology course. The course is a conceptual introduction to nanotechnology, the materials, tools, applications, and societal implications, of this rising trend. Thanks to them for their continued efforts to discover some of the most interesting work being done in the field by researchers from around the world. If you would like more information on the course itself, or the Connecticut Nanotechnology Initiative that has launched courses toward a minor in nanotechnology for undergraduates, please contact Ryan Munden.
