Description:

The appearance of coated surfaces is highly regarded in the automotive sector. Fine scratches which arise from, for example, washing the car, adversely affect not only the visual quality but could also in extreme cases, impede the protection function of the varnish (e.g. the anticorrosive coating).

The Nano-Scratch test plays an important role in solving the problem of scratches. In the process a single scratch of several micrometers depth is produced with the help of a needle (Indenter).  Whether the scratch only pushes the material aside, or whether it causes cracks to arise is a very important to study for laquer producers.
