Description:

Bone is a composite in which organic collagen fibers are deposited with inorganic nano-sized apatite on their surfaces and they are fabricated into a three dimensional structure. It is expected that apatite-polymer fiber composites with three dimensional structure can show analogous properties to those of natural bone.

It has been confirmed that apatite can deposit on the surface of individual fibers which constitute a two dimensional fabric.  Researchers are currently trying to develop apatite-organic fiber composites with three dimensional structure for bone-repairing.

Shown is an SEM photograph of bonelike nano-sized apatite which deposits on the surface of a two dimensional fabric of ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymer fine fibers.
