Description:
Above is a microscopic portrait (2.3x3.3 µm) of N. W. Timofeeff-Ressovsky, the
founder of russian genetics. The Atomic Force Microscope (AFM)
nanolithography image was obtained via the electrical local probe oxidation
technique on an ultra-thin titanium film. In this technique an AFM probe
tip (which in viewing mode allows 3-D imaging of nanometer sized surface
features) is dragged across the surface and applies a voltage at specific spots.
The voltage induces an oxide growth just under the tip. This oxide is then
viewed and reveals the image that was "grown" such as the one shown above.
