Description:

Light diffracts, or bends, as it travels through very small holes or around very small bars.  Using this principle, and the techniques of electron beam lithography and photolithography, researchers are able to create tiny lenses to focus and control light by sending it through arrays of holes, like this diffractive lens pictured above.
