Description:

The Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) is one of the most important tools for nanotechnology.  SEMs use highly energetic electrons instead of photons to image features down to a few nanometers in size.  They offer resolution far beyond that of regular optical microscopes.  SEMs are used in a wide range of fields from electronics and materials science to medicine and biology.  This photo shows the head of a common black ant which is only 500 microns long, although the SEM only provides images in black and white, this ant was colorized in Photoshop for fun and to provide better contrast to the different areas.
