Description:

This image presents a novel route to highly ordered molecular self-assembly through competing interactions on a metallic surface. Depending on the relative surface coverage of the two species, Subphthalocyanine and C60 , periodic intermixed monolayers consisting of 1D chains or 2D hexagonal patterns are formed. The structural parameters and binary phase-diagram of this system are deduced from detailed room-temperature STM studies.

This image is an artificially colored STM image of a monolayer of co-adsorbed SubPc and C60 on Ag(111) (imaged area 17 x 25 nm, U = 1.3 V, I = 20 pA). ( SubPc green, C60 yellow).
