Description:

Atomic Force Microscope image of a 10 nm gold cluster on a mica substrate.  Being able to deposit nanoclusters preformed in the gas phase onto an atomically flat surface allows the physical material properties of the nanocluster to be tested in their as-deposited positions.  This can allow nanoindentation studies of the elasticity and deformation of the cluster.  These gold nanoclusters can be used to form contacts to a variety of electronic nanodevices and molecular structures.
