Scientists at the University of Science and Technology
of China use images of carbon-60 molecules made with a scanning tunneling
microscope (STM) to determine the orientation of the molecules (buckyballs)
sitting on a silicon surface. Buckyballs are large hollow "soccerball-like"
molecules made up carbon atoms. The image on the left is the image
actually taken by the STM of the buckyball, and can be compared to the computer
calculation of what the image is expected to be on the right.
