The desire to understand the way in which microbes (or
biomolecules) interact with other surfaces is a fundamental matter that
permeates environmental and medical sciences. Composite SEM images showing
biological force microscopy. A cantilever is used to translate a living
microorganism (green) towards and away from another surface (blue background)
with nanometer precision. Attractive or repulsive forces of interaction can be
measured by monitoring the deflection of the cantilever with a laser (red). In
so doing, nanoscale forces can be measured in real time between a living cell
and another material in solution.
